Budget Breakfast Briefing

budget_breakfast_2011

Gorey Chamber ran the rule over Budget 2012 at their Budget Breakfast Briefing in Joannes Restaurant, Main Street, Gorey on Wednesday 7th December.

The Budget was summarized by Michael Doyle FCA of Doyle Associates who went through the main points of the Budget announced in the Dail on the 6th and 7th of December.  He also highlighted a number of areas which directly impact upon the business sector including, Vat increase from 21% to 23 % from the 1/1/2012, Redundancy rebate reduction from 60 to 15% and changes to the PRSI contributions for the State pension.

Chamber Executive Dick White commented “This type of event is our core work, we are in business for business and we aim to continue providing this service by staging similar events into the future”

The Budget for 2012 is the fifth in a series of austerity measures that have been brought in and the second covering the bail out, continuing White added “Business continues to be resilient in the face of the measures taken. While framed in a national and international context they impact on our local economy. We encourage everyone to support ”Local Business, Local Jobs“ by doing this we can deflect the more negative impact of these measures by supporting our own”  Photos...

We have a permanent banner “North Wexford Has It All” in the Tourist Office in Wexford Town and plans are well under way within the Tourism sector in North Wexford to develop the Gorey Halloween festival in October. Focus required on Job Retention in New Governments Jobs Initiative.

Gorey Chamber hopes for Positive Difference.

The much vaunted Jobs Budget, promised by the new coalition government within their first 100 days will be unveiled next week. Now operating under the title of a Jobs Initiative, Gorey Chamber surveyed business views at the PLUS part of its monthly networking lunch.

The focus of the Initiative should have “the overall aim of building confidence and releasing spend” according to Chamber Executive, Dick White.  Speaking following a review of survey responses, White continued “The overall view is that most business people are hopeful that the initiative will make a positive difference”.

One aspect of business that seems to receive little attention is the need to focus on retaining existing jobs, continuing, White added “It is much more cost effective to support business people to retain their existing levels of employment, rather than just trying to create new jobs. Current cost of Rates, PRSI and VAT, could be reduced, while relaxing tax deadlines are just some simple examples where a change in policy will help”.

Other aspects of business that would help would be an improvement in subsidies for job creation, work placement supports and retraining opportunities for individuals, while there was also strong support for the state capital investment to be continued.

Concluding White added “The future has to see organised help and support for small and medium business and any jobs initiative should focus on job retention as well as job creation. We would like to see these included in the upcoming announcement”.

Our annual competition attempts to capture the spirit of Easter and present the town and each business in the best possible light”

Two highly commended entries in this year’s competition were Joannes Restaurant and Gibbons Florist, both on Main St.

Concluding, White noted “The standard was high among those that participated and we thank everyone who took the time and effort this year, they really did make the Easter Windows Come Alive” Photos...
